Out and Aboot

We’ll be at Fan Expo Canada this week so come by get some signatures, comics, prints and stickers. Mike will be doing a SKETCH DUEL against SIMONE DI MEO on Friday at 5pm, so be sure to see Mike try to talk while trying to draw. We also plan on attending Comic Xplosion on Saturday at 7:30 PM at The Rec Room. Artists have an hour to paint a large canvas and fans have the ability to bid on the final piece. This is what Mike did last year.

Why you should back the Kickstarter

Last post, I went over the slipcase, dustjacket and sticker sheets.

One of the ideas of this campaign is to have a companion sketchbook filled with the original sketches and preliminaries. You can open both books and compare the original idea to the final and see the choices Mike made in the final piece. So the hardcover is your coffee table book and the sketchbook is your ideas / process junkie book. It’s like Voltron when combined it’s a different thing.

We also have a mock up of the puzzle which will be really fun to put together

Throwback

Now that I got the self promotion out of the way. Let’s look back at our ancient Facebook account and pull out a gem. The year is 2007, before real jobs, mortgages, kids and balding.

Just a bunch of young punks who wanted to make a comic together. Sequence was a passion project, we were just excited to just make a book ourselves from scratch and to actually print it. We put our whole asses into it for months so it could be ready for Fan Expo. This was the first project Mike and I worked together on which is why it felt right to share this.

Eighteen years later, Mike and I are still doing things together like this art book. Marco is still collaborating with Mike but he’s got his own things going on. Todd is all fancy now but he’s still the best. If you want to see what’s inside Sequence, let me know in the comments.

With your feedback, we were ready to move forward with a hardcover art book that we will produce ourselves. Around this time, Clover Press was making waves with their line of Marvel Art Books so we reached out to Hank Kanalz for advice. One thing led to another and yada yada yada…

We are over the moon to be sharing this with you today. Here’s what Mike said about the project in the press release:

The Marvel Art of Mike Del Mundo will be a 224-page 9" x 12" high-end coffee table book. Imagine all of Mike’s Marvel covers in one beautiful book.

The campaign will also feature:

X-MEN LEGACY #11

Definitely a lot of copy pasting on this one 😂 still took some time but it beats drawing each of those balls individually.

Magneto #1 Animal Variant

Release Date: March 5, 2014

I think the toughest part of these animal variants was choosing what animal would best fit the character. When figuring this out with Magneto I pondered, what animals relate to metal, what is something that this animal can magnetize. That question helped spark a ton of ideas and it got easier from there. Mice and mouse traps, a tiger in a metal cage and an owl perched on a branch of metal scraps.

KANG THE CONQUEROR #2

Release Date: September 15, 2021

Time travel themes are the most fun for me. There’s something about time that brings forth endless ideas. Anything time related is the kind of covers I run towards. Most of these Kang sketches I came up with were used for future Kang covers.

The first concept with the cuckoo clock was to show that Kang is a little nuts. He went crazy trying to figure out this whole time line thing and making changes until it hits perfect. The second concept of Kang running is showing how he’s constantly running through time / on a hamster wheel.

You can work with numbers and clocks when working on time concepts. There’s specific elements you can mix up and come up with different ideas. Alarm clocks, watches, sun dials, grand father clocks. When I did all these sketches, it’s just a page of ideas. Looking back, most of those ideas is the concept of trapped in time. One of those ideas in the page above was him trapped in numbers / constraints. Roman numerals are primarily used in the past and using different numerals are visually interesting.

X-MEN 92: House of XCII #3

Release Date: August 3, 2022

I didn’t go concept heavy on this one. This was a full circle moment for me and I just wanted to draw my favorite characters the way I remember them as a child, ready to smash up some sentinels.

Elektra #9

Release Date: December 17, 2014

I remember the ninjas in this cover were coloured red to stay true to the original colour of “The Hand”but it didn’t work cuz Elektra got lost in it so I switched them to a blue hue in order to bring her out as the focal point. Sometimes you gotta tweak reality to make sense of the cover.

Thor #9

Release Date: January 9, 2019

I remember reusing some elements from my Elektra #5 cover for this Thor one. The Elektra #5 had snowflakes falling in the form of crosshairs and I figured it would work well in this cover but instead the snowflakes would be spinning hammers. It was a nice garnish to the winter theme. So when in doubt, rehash!

Spider-Punk #1

Release Date: April 6, 2022

This was a fun one. When I get bored of my style I start to experiment with different brushes or new techniques to get me out of that boredom. It’s a discovery phase and when I find it I get excited again and work with that approach until I eventually get bored of it and begin the search once again. So this cover was pretty much the beginning of that discovery and me wanting to just vibe out with it. I don’t think I did much to the original sketch, it just looked done by the time I sent it in for approval. I just overlayed colors and voila.

Fantastic Four Road Trip #1

Release Date: December 2, 2020

Sometimes I have ideas that I have saved in my sketchbook for years. Sometimes they get made into fanart but a lot of the times they remain as a sketch. This idea of Invisible woman in place of the Visible Man Model Kit was one of them. I’ve had this idea written down for years and when asked to do this FF: Road Trip cover, the story fit perfectly with that idea. It was a horror story where the FF powers suddenly goes frantic and turns against them in horrifying ways. So yeah, bank your ideas.

Planet Hulk #1

Release Date: May 20, 2015

There’s something really fun about drawing the Hulk. He’s all green, bulky and massive which makes figuring out his anatomy challenging. When characters get that big, it’s easy for the poses to become stiff, so you have to put in the work to keep them dynamic.

The initial concept started with Hulk fist crashing down on Captain America. But in Planet Hulk, there are multiple Hulks, so I thought: why just one fist? A whole barrage of fists just worked. The image of multiple fists coming down on Captain America just worked.

I’m always coming up with different ideas and thinking about what kind of visuals could work on a cover. If an idea doesn’t get chosen for a particular issue, I often set it aside and save it for future covers — especially if I’m working on a full run of a series. When deadlines get tight and we need to turn in a cover quickly, it’s helpful to revisit and adapt those earlier concepts. For example, the third concept I created for Planet Hulk #1 ended up becoming the foundation for the cover of Planet Hulk #5, with some tweaks and modifications.

The Vision #7

Release Date: May 11, 2016

So this issue retells the romance between The Vision and Scarlet Witch and goes back to different events through time. I believe it revisited all of the Scarlet Witches in her different looks through their years together so I wanted to bring that all together in one cover. I added the 4 different looks of Scarlet to tell the memory lane element and I wanted her cape to be symbolic of their love mainly cuz red is symbolic to it. Her cape spread through the cover to visualize the Vision’s overwhelming feelings of love like he can’t escape it. To bring it home an extra element was added of the Vision allowing the Scarlets to phase into his heart.

I wish I had the chance to revisit that third thumbnail sketch. There was something really charming about the way the cape formed the shape of a heart — it had a sweet, whimsical quality to it. It would’ve been a perfect fit for a Valentine’s Day-themed cover. Looking back, it had a lot of potential and adds personality to the piece.

X-Men #20

Release Date: May 26, 2021

It’s been a minute but the few things I remember about this cover was researching whether Mystique was able to shape shift into anything. Like can I make her a non-living object? Or an animal? Turns out there’s a lot of debate about it on the reddits so it’s safe to say that I went for the ‘yes’ answer, in order to get my Mystique Sloth in there 😂 I’m praying for a Marvel Legends version. I mean the cover needed to be interesting and this was a good chance to have fun with these pictures. So a few rap references and some of my favorite actors were utilized and I even had my daughter draw her version of Mystique.

Lastly, I do remember researching photocopy machines to get it right and I couldn’t find the right angle for it so I remember texting my wife (who is a teacher) the sketch of the cover and to please get a snap shot of the school photocopier in that angle. She delivered! Bless her.

Jason: Mike, remember how you were obsessed with incorporating CTRL+C into a concept because that’s what Mystique’s powers were and it’s what we all use?

It would have been a cool cover to have Mystique on top of CTRL + C keys. I stand by it but the photocopier conveyed the message better.

Excalibur #1

Release Date: October 30, 2019

This was definitely a bucket list of mine. Anything X-men really, Jubilee was one of my favorite characters growing up and I’ve always had this idea lurking in my head of a Jubilee themed Bubble Gum wrapper, juggling images ofa Big League Chew or a Bazooka Joe theme.

It was an Excalibur book and seeing that Jubilee was part of that team, I was gonna make this bubble gum idea happen and make her the focus. I think what really helped was that this was a variant cover so it didn’t really have to be story centric and you can kind of just run wild with it. That’s why I love variants, it’s where a lot of my favorite ideas get approved and I can have more fun focusing on the character traits and personalities.

Check out the video in the second slide below to see some process video. Looking back at it, the original sketch was done on pencil, scanned in and I actually painted right over the pencils. It’s a process I used to do to keep the original energy of the sketch. Lots of smudge tool and textures. My process is different now but it’s cool to revisit what I did before.

CARNAGE #4

Release Date: January 27, 2016

One of Carnages coolest abilities is to shape-shift his tendrils into weapons so when coming up with ideas I thought, what if I put all the weapons I’ve seen on past books and put them together on one cover. After sketching it up, it resembled a Swiss Army knife so the idea for that happened organically like some sort of divine intervention. I just added the handle on his arm and it was done.

DR STRANGE #390

Release Date: May 23, 2018

👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀 Drawing the small details that help bring the story home are my favorite things to work on like the Cloak of Levitaion covering ghost dog’s mouth. Cloak knows what’s up when that doorbell rings.

It’s always nice when song lyrics help to tell a story perfectly. A nod to the famous @nas “Half Man, Half Amazing” quotable, but flipped a bit to go with the Jurassic theme of the book. 🦕 🦖 🦴 Actually, looking back at thumbnails I would’ve been fine doing either option. It’s cool seeing what change in the sketch vs the final piece. I honestly don’t remember why I changed the color and look of the left hand and I believe I was going for a hands on the headphones pose but I’m guessing I changed the pose to add focus to the main idea which was the phrase. I also remember doing research on what archeologists used as excavation tools so whatever you see on the cover are legit dino diggers. Research is definitely a huge part of the process.

X-Men Legacy #6

Release Date: February 27, 2013

This was a fun one, I think spent more time looking for quotes and Easter eggs than the actual artwork. For those who don’t know, the character in this book is Legion, the son of Charles Xavier. He has thousands of mutants living inside his head and he’s able to absorb their powers to use them at his will. But having that many people living inside your head would probably give you a major Tetsuo-Type migraine. I tried to channel that with the immense amounts of word balloons, some wrapping its tail around him like the bubbles are alive. I wanted it to feel claustrophobic to really make the reader feel what dudes feeling. The different colors of the words and different fonts were deliberate to give each bubble a personality which in turn made the cover more interesting. Revisiting the thumbnails, I actually had an option where I literally made the word bubbles the faces of the mutants. That option would’ve looked cool too. I love revisiting these ideas as I’ve forgotten them and I can look at them like it’s not me but a different artist. I enjoy them more that way. Can you guess all the quotes?

Still one of my favorite covers to date, I love when crazy ideas like this get the editorial thumbs up to go forward. Sometimes my favorite ideas are the ones that don’t make the final cover so I try to sell it a bit more but I’m not the greatest at words so I add little more visual love, a little more rendering, maybe some color. It worked with this one 🙏🏽

Still one of my favorite covers I’ve worked on. When I come up with one of those eureka ideas during the sketch phase, I tend to get anxious on how I’m going to execute it in the final. This one worked out nicely as most do but the anxiety is real when you want it to be THAT ONE. A I said before, I enjoy looking through these thumbnails more now as I’ve forgotten a lot of them and see them with fresh eyes like, “I came up with that”?

Untold Tales of The Punisher Max #5

Release Date: October 17 2012

I believe that this was the cover that really got Marvels attention, that lead to more work. I remember when I handed this in and immediately getting emails about the cover and how it was making the rounds in the office. From then on, I feel like I got the editors trust to let my brain run wild. This actually lead to getting my X-Men Legacy run which I can say was a pinnacle moment in my cover career. Also, written by one of my favorite guys the legendary @skottieyoung so this was huge for me back then. I wish I can revisit some of these ideas again, maybe for a later book that deals with adolescence. These ideas are still gold to me.

Elektra #6

When I think of covers, I break it down into elements. In Elektra, we have her flashbacking to her career in ballet. How do you combine performance art and fighting ninjas? She is taking a bow, as in she is done her performance and all the ninjas have been dealt with. Then the idea of her in the spotlight came, but what would the spotlight come from? A truck or a helicopter. You start sketching out the ideas and it starts coming together because of all the elements that are put on the table. Then you can add more meaning and symbols; the roses placed on the ninjas are symbols of death but they can also be a celebration of her performance where people throw flowers on the stage.

Thank you to everyone who came out to Fan Expo Canada. It was so nice to meet you all and if you bought from our table, we appreciate you. It was so nice to see your faces light up at all the stickers. Mike says we are in the happiness business (and I make fun of him) but he’s right. It was nice to have people come up to the table and say their friends told them to come check out our table. Mike participated in Comic Explosion which is a paint night for artists but with the intensity of Iron Chef (we just needed the music and Chairman). The artists were prepared with a plan, and the right art tools and it was incredible to see what they could do in an hour. Mike said the live performance aspect reminded him of his b-boy days.

Thank you to Kevin and the team for having us and for the hospitality. Thank you RAID for a great party and here’s proof of me having fun.

Jason here. Mike and I have been squabbling back and forth about art books for a long time. We’ve tried multiple times to put together an artbook and indecisiveness always got in our way. We realize if it comes to us, we’ll never decide what to do on our own.

So we need your help. We want to create an art book showcasing the artwork usually hidden in sketchbooks. This type of art is inspired by everyday life, such as the playful ideas that come to Mike while walking the dog, doodles and experiments with different art materials, and anything else that brings a smile to his face and inspires him to draw.

Our options are as follows:

1. Mike would rather make a large hardcover book (8.3" x 11.7" or larger) with 200+ pages.

I stopped counting a while back but today is special. It marks my born day and also the release of my very first Transformers cover. This is huge for me, I still remember opening my gifts and getting mostly Transformers figures, that was my thing, and as pricey as they could get, my dad was all for it because they would Transform into something else. He called it “the Two for One special”. So this is another full circle moment and I feel truly blessed.

Another big release that hits my Bday is my Spawn: Unwanted Violence Trade Paperback. Seems like the universe is aligned today as this is equally a full circle vibe. Spawn was everything and it’s special to see the labour of love collected in one book.

Big news, I did a BATTLE CHASERS cover for issue #10. Gully referencing the famous Muhammad Ali pose cuz you know, Gauntlets and Boxing gloves, they kinda go Hand in Hand, ha.

Battle Chasers was one of the pinnacle books that I learned and studied from. Actually it brings a lot of memories of my days at Bright Anvil Studios where I met all my good friends in comics. I think we each had a copy of the Battle Chasers TPB and single issues always around the studio. You know those books that when you're in an art slump, they're always that go to book bring you back to life. It was one of those. So when @gothamcentralcc hit me up to collab on a retail variant for Issue 10, I was ecstatic, I did not hesitate, real bucket list type stuff. @joemadx has constantly been a inspiration since I discovered him on Astonishing X-Men but Battle Chasers was that one that really pulled me in. I still remember flipping to the back pages to gush over the blueline pencil sketches. Mm...BlueLine!

Toronto Comicon

We’ll be at Toronto Comicon this weekend (March 17 - 19) at P141 sandwiched between Jae Lee and Dave McCaig.

We’ll be bringing our MMPR TMNT #1 variants to our Toronto friends, so if you have been waiting to grab a copy in person, now’s your chance. We’ll also be bringing some other comics that Mike worked on recently if you’re looking for his signature. If comics aren’t your thing, we’ll be bringing the best art prints you will find and more stickers (praying that the delivery person gets them to us before the show).

We won’t be taking on commissions but Mike will be signing and remarquing comics (like commissions just smaller and on a comic).

Forest City Comicon

We’re not doing a Chip’s (Canadian) Wide Tour but we will be leaving the GTA and visiting London, Ontario fans at Forest City Comicon on June 24th. Really looking forward to checking out this one day show after hearing so many good things about it.

Launch Party at the Collective on Saturday January 6th

We are having a launch party for Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Ninja Turtles II at The Collective (389 Spadina Ave. Toronto, ON M5T 2G6) on Saturday January 7th. We will be having a signing from 3pm to 6pm and have copies of all four variants for a special price. We will make sure there’s lots of other goodies like prints and t-shirts, so come on through. We will also have Miles Morales: Spider Man #1 available and Bacon will be joining us too!

After the signing, we’ll be having a 1vs1 Breaking Battle after 7pm. I’m sure Heist will have more surprises up his sleeve, so this is not something you should miss. It’s unseasonably warm in Toronto too, so you can’t use snow and wind chill as an excuse not to come.

What else?

We’ve been busy shipping this past month after The Blitz, Miles Morales: Spider-Man #1 and we dropped off a lot of MMPR TMNT II #1s in the mail this week. We’ve heard from some people that got their orders and we are happy they got them and loved the quality (International orders, sorry it takes so long but it will get there). We love feedback, so if you’re happy and you know it let us know!

We had a signing at Heroes World in December for Miles Morales: Spider-Man #1 launch. It was great to see everyone and Bacon was able to join us and sign which was really fun. If you ordered Miles Morales: Spider Man #1 Signed, did you notice the extra signature on the cover? That’s a surprise signature from Bacon.

We also shipped out the Miles Morales: Spider-Man Remarques to the 10 lucky ducks that snagged a copy. The closest to original art that we have right now from Mike are these remarques and there’s still a few spots left for a remarque on a TMNT / Power Ranger II cover left.

This might be my favorite cover to date, it’s really crazy when I hit him up to help me out with the letters, he put out the idea of actually doing the cover on a whole wall. Like really make this ish special.

I was like, if you’re up to it, IM DOWN.

It’s mind blowing how big this piece is, gotta be around 20 feet high. This was really made with a lot of love and passion so if you ever cop this book and look at that 7x10” piece, just know the original version is scaled to 100 times that. Plus look at how he freaked those letters, you done Miles good and Kingpin should be happy about his suit 😂

If you don’t already know, a lot of my childhood was spent B-boying in the basement, going to jams to battle or any place we could find to break. It’s very close to the grind of comics in which your individual style is embraced and pretty much encouraged. It was a rule to be different, originality was key. It also required hours and hours of practice everyday, just like the comic art form and both art forms are self taught. Back in the day, my nickname was Deadlymike. I keep that name with me because everything I’ve learned comes from B-Boy culture from the grind to the passion. I wouldn’t be where I am without the lessons I learned from those days and it’s still in my heart; I just took it to another form. That’s why it’s such a dream to be able to marry all my passions into this one cover. From Saturday morning and after school cartoons to comics to b-boying and now back to comics, the cypher continues. 

This cover has actually been in the works for a minute way back when Boom Studios did the first run of the TMNT/MMPR series.  I was working on a cover for issue #5 of the series and I sent in a couple sketches. One of the sketches involved the Power Rangers and the Turtles in a B-Boy cypher in the sewers, rocking and just having fun. 

To be honest, it was a filler concept sketch that cover artists send to editors to give them 3 options to choose from.  It felt like something that made a lot of sense to me but I wasn’t sure if it made sense to anyone else. I felt like it was something that would happen if these two teams were hanging out in the Turtle Lair. I mean they’re teenagers doing teenager things like partying, eating pizza, dancing and hanging out. I would imagine them eventually having a B-Boy cipher and dancing on taped up cardboard pizza boxes and putting in Alpha-5 was the cherry on top. Drawing a robot doing the robot is a bit on the nose but it just works. 

To my surprise, Boom actually loved it and gave me the choice to choose from the sketches. We ended up going for a different cover but my editor Dafna was kind enough to offer the b-boy cover in a future issue.  A year later she hits me up and tells me that they’re doing a sequel to the TMNT/MMPR series with a new #1 and she wanted to use that cover as one of the variants to launch the series. ‘90s me was literally jumping for joy, with that same feeling of when I first landed a proper windmill. 

How did we get to do a Metalhead cover? While working on the Alpha 5 cover, Dafna suggested to add Metalhead somewhere on the cover since he would be showing up in the book. TMNT is my childhood so Metalhead would be HUGE. The more I worked on the cover, it really felt like a part of me. It had to be my own variant. I put out the idea that maybe we replace Alpha 5 with Metalhead and that could be my variant. The planets aligned and Boom was on board once again.

While finishing up the covers I thought I needed to get “Heist” involved. Heist is one of my close friends and fellow B-Boy compadre (we used to destroy  crews back when, haha). Heist & “Ninja” are the proud owners of The Collective, the biggest Graffiti / Collectible shop in Toronto. It just felt right to bring us back to where we come from and what made us who we are now. I couldn’t share it with anyone else. I’m really proud of what we’ve done and this cover is more than just a cover but a love letter to the dance form. A dedication to the B-boy.
